Description:The substitute teacher collaborates with the lead teacher and/or teacher to create a safe, positive and stimulating environment in the classroom which follows the Office of Child Care guidelines and standards. Tasks include following through on curriculum planning, classroom management, and timely arrival and departure. Candidates must meet the Office of Child Care standards for teacher qualifications.

Duties:A.Student Related Activities (40% E)
1.Work with individuals, small groups or the entire class to support the teaching of language, social, self-help, cognitive and motor skills.
2.Implement individualized student objectives and participate in behavioral programs.
3.Be alert to symptoms of stress, abuse and neglect in families by checking children daily and being aware of changes in behavior and moods.
4.Suggest and supervise play activities.
5.Assist with arrival and departure of students.
6.Carry out curriculum planning for students.
B.Classroom Responsibilities (30% E)
1.Appropriately use classroom materials.
2.Clean and sanitize diaper changing area, toys, cots, blankets, etc.
3.Keep accurate attendance records.
4.Assume the Lead Teacher's/Teacher's responsibilities in his/her absence.
5.Assist in the oversight of volunteers and practicum students.
6.Help with field trips when applicable.
7.Understand the need for confidentiality and follow established procedures.
8.Supervision of breakfast and lunch (and snack in full day program).
9.Assist children daily with personal hygiene, i.e., toileting, diaper changing, bathing when necessary.

C.Family Contacts (20% E)
1.Maintain open communication with parents' messages and periodic visits by parents to the classroom (e.g., pick up and drop off).
1.Responsible for safety and welfare of yourself and others, to include, but not limited to: proper lifting and sanitation practices.
2.Ensure students are taught safety skills at PBC and in community environments.
3.Ensure safety requirements are practiced as outlined in the safety manual.
Qualifications:Education and Experience
1.Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
2.Meet teacher qualifications as defined by Oregon Child Care Division i.e. one year of full time employment in a certified child care center or related college degree.
3.15 E.C.E. units highly desirable.
4.One + years experience working with preschool/toddler children in a certified child care center.
5.Experience with people with developmental disabilities preferred.
B.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Licenses
1.Valid Oregon driver's license, CPR, First Aid and Food Handler Cards.
2.Willingness to be supervised.
3.Ability to communicate with Lead Teacher and other staff members, volunteers, other agencies and parents.
4.Some familiarity with the developmental steps of learning.
5.Some familiarity with high-risk children and developmentally delayed adults preferred.
6.Sensitivity to distressed students and families.
7. Patience and flexibility to meet the needs of individual children as well as those of the classroom.
9.Bi-lingual Spanish speaking is strongly desired.
1.Daily exposure to communicable diseases, infections, head lice, scabies, etc.
2.Exposure to toxic chemical treatments to eliminate the conditions mentioned above.
3.Exposure to detergents, excrement, mucous, saliva, blood, violent students (kicking, biting, scratching).
1.Must be able to lift and hold 30-50 lb. children.
2.Must be able to be on your feet and moving almost all day.
3.Must be mentally prepared to assist with emergencies such as choking and bodily injuries.
4.Must exercise patience in the face of extreme behaviors of children with special needs.
5.Must exercise patience in the face of family/parental crises.
